Exploring the Future

The Game Process - Implication Wheel Game Paks

Exploring the Future can be conducted in sessions ranging from 2.5 to 4 hours.  The exercise can be used multiple times with new issues.

A minimum of five participants is recommended for the exercise; one facilitator can works with five groups of 5-6 participants.

I.  Introduction - Scouting the Future

II. Introduction to the Issue

"What are the implications of..., i.e. using drugs?"

III. Round 1

In small groups, participants are given a "first-order" implication of the issue and a number of both second- and third-order implications.  They study this information and add one new second- and two new third-order implications.

IV.  Round 2

In the second round, participants are given a new "first-order" implication.  In this round, they are able to add more second- and third-order implications.

V.  Round 3 (Optional)

In the third round, participants are given another new "first-order" implication.  In this more advanced step, they are asked to identify first-, second-, and third-order implications.

VI.  Bridges and Barriers

Bridges can be built to increase the likelihood of desirable implications occurring.  Barriers can be constructed to decrease the likelihood of something negative occurring.  In this round, participants identify two possible bridges and two possible barriers.

VII.  De-Briefing the Exercise
